Hello beautiful people!I made this smoothie especially for you! It’s lusciously delicious and filled with goodness to keep you and your skin glowing from the inside out!I have used NuZest Clean Lean Protein (pea), Vanilla , however you could use any other vanilla flavored protein powder – as long as it’s not filled with nasty stuff! Make sure you can understand the ingredients list when you buy a protein powder. I also recommend Hemp Protein Powder for this recipe, if you have a vanilla flavoured one or you could just add some vanilla powder or extract.
What you need:
½ cup coconut water
½ cup nut milk or coconut milk
½ avocado
1/4 banana
3/4 cup strawberries
2 heaped tsp vanilla pea protein powder
3 tsp freshly ground linseeds
1 tsp cacao nibs
1 natural vitamin E capsule
1 tablespoon abc spread/almond butter or 1 handful brazil nuts
What to do:
Add banana, coconut water, milk, avocado, strawberries, protein powder, abc nut spread into your blender
Take your vitamin E capsule and snipe as close to the top of the capsule as you can and squeeze the contents of the capsule into your blender.
Blend well and serve in a glass.
(If you’re smoothie comes out too thick just add a little more milk, depending on how thick you like your smoothie).
Grind your linseeds with a coffee grinder or blender until they form a meal
Pour the ground linseeds and cacao nibs on top of you smoothie!
I grind up the linseeds separately and pop them on top as my smoothie crunch factor – you know you need the chew factor in your smoothies right? Digestion starts in your mouth!
Also please use freshly ground linseeds! Premade LSA or Flax/Linseed meal is potentially off.
DRINK!
What’s good about it?
Apart from being reallllly yummy this beauty smoothie ticks quite a few health boxes:
Avocado:
Avocado is high in vitamin C and vitamin E and increases the absorption of other antioxidants that will boost skin health. Avocado’s are high in carotenoids such as lutein and zeozanthin which help to reduce oxidative stress in the body. This makes avocados anti- aging and they also contain amino acids which will build collagen and help prevent wrinkles.
Natural Vitamin E
Natural Vitamin E is labelled as – d-alpha-tocopherol – this natural vitamin E is much better for you and absorbed better too. Avoid the synthetic version which will be labelleddl-alpha-tocopherol (notice the L).
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that stops the oxidisation of fats, which is why you take vitamin E with your fish oil or krill oil. It also helps your body use Vitamin A- which also great for your skin. Prevents clotting so caution if on blood thinning medication such as warfarin.
You’re food speaks to you
I remember learning in Naturopathy school about the doctrine of signatures and avocado is shaped like a female womb and of course its great for women’s hormones and prevents cervical cancer.
Omega-3’s
Linseeds contain omega-3 essential fatty acids which are anti-inflammatory for the skin which may help conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea. Omega-3’s may also be protective against UV damage and therefore skin cancer.
Antioxidants
Strawberries are high in vitamin C, an important antioxidant that is essential for growth and repair of cells. It helps to form collagen and elastin which is what keeps our skin looking youthful. It also enhances immune function, preventing free radicals and it binds with toxic chemicals so they don’t harm your body.
Vitamin C is good in times of stress as it supports the adrenal system, I always remember my nutrition teacher at The Southern School of Natural therapies saying, “if you wake up in the morning feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck, you need vitamin C!”
Vitamin C assist the absorption of iron and helps to recycle vitamin E! Another beauty bonus!
Hydration
Coconut water helps to keep you hydrated and replenishes electrolytes that you might have lost from sweating or diarrhoea. Coconut water is the next best thing for your skin after water. It has antioxidants and is low in sugar.
Protein
Protein powder – all our cells need protein, they are the building blocks for our bodies. Ensure your protein powder is good quality ie. Not high in sugar, no soy, no additives. I’m not really sold on whey protein. If you don’t have protein, use a free-range organic egg! They are a complete protein and also beneficial to your skin. Add some vanilla powder or extract to flavour the smoothie if you are using an egg.
