No more nesquik! This cacao milk recipe became an obsession after I had an almond milk from Pressed Juices in Sydney, Australia. If you haven’t been to Pressed Juices, you must go! Such a yummy assortment of cold pressed juice goodness and detox/cleanse programs. They have trained nutritionists to help you with your cleanse too!
To make your own homemade choccy milk without the sugar is easy! Using raw CACAO powder rather than Cocoa powder is important. Cocoa is the result of raw cacao beans that have been heated. Heating removes all the beneficial nutrients and enzymes from the raw cacao.
Cacao is also known as “food of the gods”. I surely think it’s a god send! It’s one of my favourite superfoods and below i’ll tell you why.
Why is Raw Cacao good for me?
- Beneficial for the nervous system through the antioxidant resveratrol which protects nerve cells from damage
- Protective to cardiovascular system, lowering blood pressure and relaxing blood vessels
- Cacao is also high in sulfur, which helps form strong nails and hair… BEAUTY FOOD!
- Super rich in antioxidants like polyphenols to neutralise free radicals and decrease inflammation
- Enhances mood due to phenethylamine content. Phenethylamine also increases focus and alertness.
- Rich in minerals which is important in this day and age as some soils are becoming mineral deficient. Contains: magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, copper, zinc, manganese
- Mood enhancing: anandamide in cacao makes us feel great by causing changes in blood pressure and blood-sugar levels, which produces that feel good feeling.
Note: Apparently cacao contains Theobromine which can cause headaches in some people. It’s quite similar to caffeine and can be quite stimulating and have an affect on the nervous system and heart so like anything if you over do it or you’re a sensitive soul, you may notice some symptoms like headaches or it may over stimulate your nervous system. I am quite sensitive to caffeine but don’t notice any effects from cacao, however everyone is different.
Using dairy-free milk in this recipe (even if you are not allergic to dairy or you are vegan) is beneficial as dairy may inhibit the absorption of the nutrients in cacao.
